Welcome to what was to be a spring homeschool project for my children, hatching ducklings! If you read this blog you know that our first hatch failed #1 because of a sudden cold snap and the incubator being in a room with too much of a draft. #2 because when we moved the eggs from the turner to the bottom of the bator as one does three days before hatch time the temp dial was some how moved we believed and the temp hit 105…. in short, nothing hatched and it was a very sad time here for all. Thankfully the Farm that works with homeschoolers on this project let us try again as we had a good hatch last year for them!
After 28 days, here is what we have:
Hatchling #1, the largest and yellow the children named Sunny!
Hatchling #2 with the poof on his head names Lovey!
All told 12 ducklings hatched and here they all are!
Another one named Beakers, a little guy who has a slightly deformed beak and looked a mess. We thought he would die, he made it!
One named Ruby, the smallest little dark duckling born still with blood in her shell and we thought might not make it, she has.
Others named Capachino, Tiny, Fluffy, Choco, Pinky, Applejack and a few others with my little pony names I can not remember!
They are three days old in this photo and out of the duckling nursery that is in the house for a waddle around the yard for a bit.
It was as if the neighborhood children could hear them inside their homes and soon more children joined ours to love on the ducklings.
The children figured out that if the ducklings are separated they will try to get back together. Some how this ended up turning into a duckling racing game…. Capa and Sunny won most of these being the biggest ducklings and very sure of themselves as little leaders!
They all had a great time and the ducklings got to eat some grass and bugs and get a workout before getting tucked back in under their heat lamp next to their watering jug and duckling food.
They are so adorable!! Glad the kids had a great time.
They are so tiny. I’m suprised how they look for only being 3 days old. I can’t say I’ve seen ducks that young before though.
