Crunchy Parenting Right Again
July 19, 2012 by Kimberly Storms
For many many years now Crunchy parents have been shouting about the dangers of BPA and other chemicals in plastics. Most of us went un-heard or worse, called crazy or over protective parents.
If your a crunchy parents I bed like me, you would rich if you had a dime for every time someone said “Well I did/used such and such growing up and it didn’t kill me!” or some such non-sense!
BPA being bad for us is not something new!
Bisphenol A (BPA) has been associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease, miscarriages, breast and prostate cancer, reproductive dysfunction, metabolic dysfunction and diabetes, and neurological and behavioral disorders (Braun, 2009; Lang, 2008; Li, 2009; Sugiura-Ogasawara, 2005)
The FDA is cracking down finally on BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups. States like California are ahead of the curve when it comes to dangerous plastic chemicals, other places need to catch up already! It is not just in bottles we need to worry about though! It is all plastics that we come in contact with and not just for babies and children!
BPA is found in many canned foods, drink packaging, water bottles, food containers, paper receipts, microwaves, toys and so much more.
BPA has a short shelf life in urine from just hours to days. Yet studies have shown contamination of 93% of us. Meaning we are getting poisoned all the time, constantly! Not only is this stuff linked to cancer but it keeps chemotherapy from being effective.
So while I think eating clean is important, and buying organics is great, I think avoiding BPA needs to be higher on the lists and shame on the FDA for not taking action sooner and not doing more about this now!
